Cool Cars for Women

Browsing

When it comes to the car industry, there is nothing more important than brand perception. It’s why the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, are always there or thereabouts at the top of the sales charts. And, as we will begin to see in a moment, a bad reputation can be hard to shift. Here are a few car brands that are often seen as poorer siblings by the mainstream car market, and why we think those thoughts are a little unfair.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen hit the headlines earlier this year, as most of you will know. They admitted hoodwinking their customers – and the world’s governments – over emissions testing. You can read more about the biggest story in the car industry over the last few years here. It’s going to cause them a lot of problems – not just with their finances, but their reputation, too. And, if history is anything to go by, once that reputation is in tatters, it can be hard to put it all back together. But, let’s be honest. Volkswagen was once a great car brand and are responsible for many of the current technologies that lots of cars on the road still use today. The actions of a few stupid people at the top of the chain should never spoil that.

The Smart Car

Smart cars are nothing short of a joke for many car enthusiasts. But, they miss the point. There are plenty of people out there who mock it for its failure to beat economy cars, but it was never meant to keep down your fuel costs. It’s a city vehicle that helps you park easily in busy streets and parking bays – no more, and no less. I would suggest that had the makers of the Smart Car called it something other than a car it would be seen as far more acceptable.

Skoda

If you were around in the 80s, you might remember that Skodas was a laughing stock. The Czech manufacturer’s cars were the go-to punchline for anyone telling an auto-based joke, and if your dad had one, you would be, too. However, it’s been decades since Skoda started turning things around, and now they make exceptional cars. Even to this day, you will find people that snort in derision. But, the fact is that new Skoda cars are just as good as anything BMW, VW, or Mercedes can come up with. The company has come a long way since their Soviet-influenced designs. And, they have released some stunning vehicles in the past decade or so.

Hyundai

If ever there was a better example of a car brand that can’t seem to establish itself, it’s Hyundai. The Korean manufacturer makes some excellent vehicles across all price brackets, but for some reason, it has never been in fashion. Again, the 80s has a lot to answer for – what was it with that decade? The Pony and Excel cars were, admittedly, horrendous, and often sold to people with bad credit – or less. But, that was a long time ago, and if you’re looking for value, you will always be hard-pressed to find better than Hyundai in the current market.

Honda

Honda has been through all kinds of popularity issues. In times gone by, they were a great manufacturer and people loved them, but at some point in time, things went awry for the Japanese car maker. Now, though, they are beginning to see the fruits of selling great value cars at affordable prices. There is an element of safe design and dull driving, of course. But their engines are famous for going forever, and if you look after it, your Honda will last for many years after the competition has long since gone.

BYD

BYD is a Chinese car manufacturer – one of the biggest in the country. It has a large number of cars on its roster, including hybrids, alternative fuel engines, and light motor vehicles. Sales of BYDs are virtually non-existent in the west, although there have been exports sent as far west as the Ukraine. BYD, like all other Chinese car manufacturers, have no reputation at all over here. Many people on these shores and in Europe wouldn’t dream of buying a Chinese vehicle. It’s peculiar as they are amongst the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world. So much so, that renowned investor Warren Buffet has a 10% stake in the company, And, as we all know, he is a man that rarely backs duds.

Subaru

Subaru became a joke car in the late 90s and early 2000s when their Impreza became the flagship vehicle for every single boy racer in the country. But, these days, Subaru has shed that image and is now one of the most trusted car brands in the world. There are still those that turn their noses up at the mere mention of a Subaru, though. But, with reliable products and beautiful looking cars, it is worth looking beyond the snobbery. Head over to The Telegraph to see the kind of reception the brand is getting these days from current owners.

Scion

Take a quick look at the Scion xB and half of you will laugh, and the other half of you may cough with disgust. There’s no doubt it is a unique looking car – far different to anything else on the road. And, during its release, there were plenty of predictions of complete and utter failure. However, as is often the case with cars, it found its market. The older generations love the xB, for all the reasons that everyone else hates it. They are simple to drive, for a start, and their boxy look gives a feeling of safety and security. Also, the perspective from inside the car is spectacular. The unusual windscreen provides an excellent view of the road ahead, which you don’t get with any other mainstream car. It’s easy to get in and out of, too.
OK, so that’s our roundup of some of the car brands that deserve a little more of your respect. Some of them will never shake their reputation off, it seems. But, that means that the rest of us can enjoy them at a lower price tag!

We all dream of parking a brand new luxury car on the driveway. We’d love to show off the new Mercedes badge or show up to the golf course in a new Jaguar. Unfortunately, these cars are usually well out reach for the average buyer. Their price tags race into the hundreds of thousands, and even the most generous finance plan won’t cover it. When this is the case, many buyers start to glance towards the used market. A brand new model may be out of your price range, but what about the second-hand version?

For many buyers, this is the only way to get your hands on your dream car. We wholeheartedly recommend browsing the used market. We’ve picked up some fantastic bargains ourselves, including a stunning Mercedes at motorlinedirect.co.uk. However, it’s not all plain sailing on the used market. Buyers are easily overcome by the luxury badge, and forget to check the condition. It might have a low price tag, but luxury cars are seriously expensive to maintain and repair. By all means, buy a used luxury car, but avoid the following pitfalls at all costs.

Failing to research

Gathering knowledge is the single most important thing you can do when buying a car. We can’t stress this enough. It’s even more important when it comes to luxury cars. Why? Because, every year or era has a different value when it comes to luxury and classic motors. As a buyer, you need to know why a 1961 Jaguar E-Type is worth more than a 1974 Jaguar E-Type. When buying luxury cars, knowledge is power. Make sure you know how to spot a bargain, and understand what you’re paying for.

Buying for the badge

We often see luxury car owners blinded by the status symbol and badge associated with a car. Yes, the car of your dreams may have the coveted Mercedes badge. But, that doesn’t make it exempt from breakdown, repair, or faults. A super cheap Merc is not necessarily a bargain; it could simply mean it’s a death-trap! Don’t trust the badge. Use your instincts, and check the car thoroughly. We’ll show you a little more about that in the next section. Just remember, you’re looking for more than just a badge. There’s no point buying a Jaguar if it spends half the year in the mechanic’s shop.

Failing to test drive

As a member of multiple classic car clubs and organisations, we hear a lot of horror stories. The most common story on the grapevine involves blind-buying on the internet. Buyers find a bargain classic or luxury car online, and they make an impulse purchase. We’ve seen this happen at car auctions too. They’ve been searching for a specific car for years, and they finally find it at a bargain price. Of course, it arrives in a mess, costing the buyer a fortune to restore to road-legal status. Don’t make this mistake. Always test drive the prospective car before buying.

Follow this advice, and you’ll make a sensible investment. Follow your heart, but listen to your head too!

The Range Rover Evoque has been voted best car for women drivers in 2012 according to the world’s most prominent women motoring writers. Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) was set up in 2009 to create an award specific to “the fastest growing consumer segment in the world and arguably the most influential.” That’s women.

The Economist wrote a story in Jan 2009 suggesting that women make the final decision in as much as 85% of all company cars. It’s interesting that only until recently have there been car awards voted by women. The criteria for judging by a panel of 17 worldwide women motoring writers included:

  • Safety
  • Value-for-money
  • Aesthetic appearance
  • Storage space
  • Child–friendliness
  • Ease-of-driving
  • Colour
  • Sex appeal
  • Environmental footprint

The winning car may not reach 0–100 km/h in less than so many seconds but is a car that appeals very strongly to women and that, in essence, is what the award is all about. So, the Range Rover Evoque best meets a woman’s desire for all the criteria above so let’s see for ourselves what all the fuss is about.

The Evoque is the smallest Range Rover ever built and the only car from Range Rover that comes with a 2-wheel drive option. Available in three door coupe and five door variants, the super cool Range Rover Evoque has won over 100 awards since its launch in September 2011. Impressive stuff and we can see what all the fuss is about! Here’s the Evoque’s grand unveiling at its 2011 launch at Kensington Palace, London with Victoria Beckham:

Here’s the cool TV advert that promoted the Range Rover Evoque clearly targeting women with its glitz and glamour:

Here’s Top Gear’s James May testing out the Evoque’s toughness by driving it through Death Valley! He then goes on to gauge its stylishness by using it to chauffeur a global megastar across Las Vegas. Well worth a watch!

Smaller and more efficient than the Range Rover Sport, the Evoque targets women, city-based drivers for the first time by Range Rover and judging by their sales, it’s a brilliant marketing call. This was helped by fashion guru Victoria Beckham (photographed above) coming on board to design three unique ‘design themes’ for the Evoque including interior trim and equipment.

The Range Rover Evoque price starts from £29,000 for entry-level five-door models. In terms of insuring the Evoque, with the recent insurance price hike for women in the news, we would recommend looking at online car insurance quotes to get the best deal.

The official presentation of the trophy to Land Rover will take place at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012. Responding to the news of this latest honour, John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director said:

“The Women’s World Car of the Year title further reflects the great market reach of Evoque. Across the world, women are a customer base in their own right, so it is vital for any manufacturer to ensure their products meet their preferences and requirements. As a vehicle designed, engineered and built in Britain, the Range Rover Evoque continues to demonstrate its world-class appeal. We are delighted that as well as the 111 honours it has received for its design, engineering and performance, it has proved just as successful in terms of excellent global sales.”

Coming Soon – Range Rover Evoque Soft-Top!
Finally, the Range Rover Evoque has not finished there! Coming to a showroom near you in 2014 will be the world’s first soft-top Range Rover. The cabriolet version of the ‘baby’ 4X4 Range Rover Evoque is expected to cost between £35,000 and £50,000.

One of our favorite car blogs Pistonheads.com showcased photos of the soft-top Range Rover Evoque from the 2012 Geneva Motor Show where it was one of the stars. Surely another host of awards on the way for this beauty. The new Range Rover Evoque is definitely a beautiful car and great look for any woman.
